What is a redirect chain?

A redirect chain is what happens when one URL sends the browser to another, which sends it to another, and so on before the final page loads. Each step is a hop. A single redirect is normal and healthy. A long chain of several hops means every visitor and every search crawler has to make extra round trips before they reach real content.

Why do too many redirects hurt SEO and speed?

Every hop adds a full network round trip, so a chain of three or four redirects can add noticeable delay before anything renders, which is worst on mobile connections. Search engines also spend part of their crawl budget following the chain and can dilute the ranking signals passed along it. Collapsing a chain down to a single redirect fixes both problems.

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302?

A 301 is a permanent redirect: it tells browsers and search engines that the page has moved for good and that ranking signals should transfer to the new URL. A 302 is temporary and signals that the original URL will return, so search engines keep indexing the old address. Use a 301 when you have permanently moved a page and a 302 only for genuinely temporary detours.
